I have a parcel of oak to extract from a bank and am looking to buy a winch most of the buts are 50 to 70 cube so 2-3 tonnes the odd 4 tonne butt. Any recommendation and anyone selling a second hand winch many thanks.

Don't know where in Kent you are but Bromley way there's an ebay seller 'pratola-serra'. He has dozens of Tirfor-type winches (not Chinese!) He's only got one or two listed at the mo but he has others.

Mendiplogs on here has a 5 ton pto winch, he bought it off a mate of mine last year, great tool and well looked after. If you get the title of your thread changed to ' PTO winch wanted, cash waiting ' (ask a mod) he will be sure to see it or PM him:biggrin:

Check out the Riko winches. Might not be as cheap as a second hand one but you'll be suprised how much winch your money will buy you. I'm impressed going to replace the Fransgard with one next year.

Thanks for thoughts as far as make is concerned any to avoid and the best to have also having not used a pto winch does 5 tonnes mean rolling or skidding just not to keen to splash the cash and not have enough grunt to get the logs up the slope thought about a boughton but keen on getting the butt up off the deck once winched in.
