I noticed this on a copper beech yesterday and it got me thinking. The cold followed by the mild seems to have triggered them, rather than any clock type thing. I have concluded that trees don't have watches or calenders and have no idea what month it is:001_smile:

Yeah from looking round some of the shrubs on area's we maintain it's looking like an early spring may be on the cards right enough.....

@central-services, the field where my wife keeps her horses is completely the same, really getting in a state.

I did a Sycamore end of december 28 or 29 i think there was loads of sap and buds were looking like they were about to open.

I would of thought that's got to be early. I do remember doing a sycamore years ago, that was early January and the sap was turning into icicles as it was pouring out, that was a cold day haha

I did a crown reduction on a Walnut at end of November and this was dormant, however less than half a mile away 3 weeks later did some dead wooding and removal of failing branches on another Walnut and it was like it was raining underneath it, quite strange. I do put it down to the trees believing its Spring after a hard cold spell then a rapid rise in temperature, if we get another cold spell it will confuse them even more! BTW elder down here already in leaf!
