Yew wood

Well i have some nice Laburnum and Yew,air dried under cover for at least 24 months....thinking i would save it for the woodturners,who maybe give me a fair price for the gorgeous wood that it is/can become,and especially after storing it for so long

 

After reading the last few posts i am tempted to just burn it!!

 

 

The laburnum will go; it's one of turners' very favourites. The yew may or may not.

if your selling wood advertise it with a price, negotiate/haggle from there,

Hi Robbo 110 theres about a dozen rings left from 24" down to 12"Im 10mins from junc 29- M25.

After reading the comments though I have to say it was a mistake by me to think there was a bigger market for turning than firewood its a no brainer really,I wont let sentiment get in the way next time, thanks for the input everyone.

I have been planking for 5 years and I used to spend a long time saving interesting bits of wood in the mistaken belief it'll be good for woodturning, would make more money than firewood and is a nicer thing to do....

 

.... it never was!

 

Unfortunetly the facts are that on the whole wood turners are retired older people who do it as a bit of a hobby. They want dry ready to turn blanks all cut to shape in small quantities.

 

They do not pay very much more than firewood prices....

 

I went to a woodturners meeting with 50 members there, was sellign lumps of yew, labernum, small burrs for £2 a lump. I came away with £40-00 and half the truck was still full.

trouble is, from what i can see, people who have got some nice wood, suitable for turning etc, either want stupid money for it or advertise it 'asking for offers' ...... there has been some burrs etc that have come along with the seller asking for offers..

as a buyer, im not interested in making offers, after all, im the buyer; not the seller!!!! if your selling wood advertise it with a price, negotiate/haggle from there,

if your asking for offers dont be upset when turners/carvers offer you beer money, if it was that easy to turn the wood into a big profit everybody would be turning!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

 

But that's the point robbo - why offer beer money for it? Why not offer a fair price?! Build a relationship with the tree surgeon/wood seller and then they will look out for the bits worth turning.

 

You've sort of contradicted yourself basically saying advertise with a price to haggle with but not a stupid price... well how does the fellow know what a stupid price is?! Or if he asks for offers you're saying don't get upset if you offer him beer money.

 

I've had around 80 to 100 woodturners to my yard. Of them 4 still come and buy off me regularly. Of the rest the less said the better...

Giving woodturners a bad name huh (where not all old and retired woodturners you know).

 

As everyone knows firewood prices are rising and demand is more, but things like woodturning wood, charcoal is not. So its a shame for me to say this but its probably worth more to you as firewood.

 

I don't blame anyone for trying to get it cheap, especially when they say make me an offer . Some people ask for silly money and some are reasonable. The thing that gets me the most is travel as theres no one local so i add that into what i'll offer people, i'll even be going to exeter sometime this year to collect a load of dried blanks but thats due to a recent flood i've had.

A have a few regulars who are great to deal with - it's just a shame they seem to be in the minority.

 

I realise that woodturning takes a long time and there is not a lot of money in it but in my experience they tend to alienate suppliers with the way they go about buying wood.

 

I've spent a lot of time collecting interesting bits and pieces, gluing the ends and drying them only to find no one seems to want to pay you for doing this.....

rob, if someone asks me for offers, out of principle i offer low money, ive found whatever i offer, it's never enough,

however, if they lay there cards on the table, & ask me say... £100 per ton, then we can usually have a deal, i like dealing with honest open people, who dont mind stating how they value things, i find its an easier way of building a business relationship!!!!

I think selling turning wood by weight is an excellent method. If dry logs at 20% MC are selling for £250 a tonne then green turning wood at 40% MC would need to be a minimum of £125 a tonne which seems very cheap to me at 12.5p per kg.
