Can any one reccommend a decent accouting software ideal for tree surgeons

I would recommend Quickbooks by Intuit (google it). Brilliantly intuitive and ideal for all small businesses. I've been using and recommending it to others for 15 years and the five people who are using it as a result of my recommendation now swear by it.

 

The only negative thing to say about it is that some accountants would prefer their clients to use a 'professional' accounts package -- that's because they like their clients to be dependant on them. There are a few enlightened accountants around who realise that it's good for their clients to buy software that they don't need a degree in accounting to use.

Hi John, I have had a look at quickbooks. Which do you use: Simplestart, Pro, or Premier?

As i'm on a Mac i use 'ProfitTrain' but find it hard to work with. It has certain categories which aren't applicable to my business but you can't edit them so you have to work around them.

Can you just hit a button at the end of the year and it will produce your accounts, ready to email or print? Can all the data transfer to ms excel?

Yeah i saw that on their website but its the Beta version, so its still a work in progress. I am very tempted to give it a go but don't know which one to go for?

 

Do i need the most expensive 'Premier' version or can i get away with the 'start-up' package?

 

My year end is coming up in February so i'm definately looking to change programs ready for the next financial year.

Are you a self employed sole trader? Are you VAT registered? No? Then a spreadsheet really is all you need.

Dont think you would need Premier tbh, try the free trial of the starter package and see if it does everything you need. You can always upgrade anyway.

Can't comment of the other packages. I run Sage Instant accounts and Sage payroll 50 for the wages. Been using them for about 15 years now. Our training company also runs Sage accounts. They take a bit of getting used to but most accountants can use their bureau license to access them without having to print of everything at the year end. Whatever package you get make sure you can make corrections easily or "roll-back" the system and make sure you keep updates/backups often.

 

Get a demo version sent to you first - I think Sage will do this FOC

My Wifes a bookeeper, does the books for a couple of local businesses - she uses Sage and it seems the weapon of choice for small companies - don't think it is for people that havent kept proper books though:confused1:
