Geocaching

While we were in Devon at new year we stumbled accross a box hidden in a pipe in the middle of nowehere, when we opened it we found it was a geocache:

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache.

Anyone into this or stumbled accross one before, makes a walk interesting if there is a "prize" at the end - there is probably one on your doorstep you didnt know about!!

Maybe we could set up arbtalk geocaches throughout the country/world!!

i came across this when doing a big signage contract along the north downs way in kent and surrey, lots of people mainly wearing anoraks in summer were asking me about the geo cashe site along from where i was working. I was amazed that once i knew about it how many people were actually walking or driving the trail for this sole purpose

I heard about this geocache thing once on the radio, after pondering it for a moment I realised it was quite possibly the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard of and immediately dismissed it and never thought about it again until I read this post, I'll now forget about it again......hopefully forever.

Me, the misses & the kids have been geo-caching for a couple of years now. It's great for the kids as it gets them out & about. We have been to places, that we would have driven past previosly.

You can even get apps for your smart phones, so when your out & about you can see whats in your area.

I think its for ramblers who are more geeky than normal ramblers!!!

Yeah for sure. There's a few in the park I work at. A couple of them were put in by our assistant. We hire out gps units to school groups and have them do some sort of challenge with it. I keep my nose out of it though as it really is dull as dishwater, particularly when you find people who are into it to the point of obsession. When I was young, it was all orienteering. Now it's bloody hanging off the side of bridges looking for a kinder egg sized parcel wedged between brickwork. The kids lap it up though, so I suppose it is a good thing, and it gets them out and about.
