What's eating my tree?

Can anyone suggest what may be stripping the bark off this tree and why? It's only at ground level, no where else.

Nope. To low & regular for roe, its also the wrong time for stripping

Thanks for your replies Had another look today and there's definitely evidence of rabbits around the base of the trees. And they've started munching bark off most of the trees in that woodland area. Is there anything I can do to stop them and does this mean disaster for the trees?

Id say rabbit too, they might stop if the snows gone, they were probably a bit desperate. Can you shoot them or humane trap? The pictured tree will prob be ok, if thats the worst, I think you have got away with it.
