VAT on climbing helmets

Just went on to one of the retailers sites on the righthand side that i normally buy from to buy a new vertex vent and noticed vat is charged, went on to two of the others and their helmets are vat exempt.

Anyone know why this is ?

Think non vat is for non business E.g like recky climbing at the weekend ends and the Vat you put on for business use to claim back at the end of the year

 

Its something like that If its just for yourself no vat if you buying it for a groundsman who works for you VAT goes on

I posted a similar query on this forum a couple of months ago regarding VAT on boots.

 

Basically things work like this. Some suppliers may or may not quote VAT on their website prices because thats the way their sites have been designed and set up. It just makes it easier for them from the initial design phase rather have to list every VAT or non-VAT combination for each individual item where its applicable for exemptions for personal PPE.

 

The important thing to remember is that if you are ordering an item for your own personal use, and zero VAT is applicable for that purpose, then you simply state this when ordering and the VAT should'nt be charged.

 

If you are a company/employer that is buying PPE for yourself or anyone else then VAT is applicable and you are charged accordingly.

I think there are numerous issues with vat on protective gear- this is not a luxury at all.

Question- Is there vat on childrens protective head gear - there isn't on clothes though you'd think there was the price they are.

Some retailers charge vat on steelies others don't- If i wasn't vat registered i'd say whatever i had to to get the non vat price- obviously this can't be right

i dont know how true it is but someone told me due to hse protective clothes and boots and safty stuff it ment to be v.a.t free

I was told today by colleague that if you buy it for leisure you don't pay vat or if you want it for work and to put the invoice/reciept through your books then you pay vat .

If it is PPE for yourself to use then it is exempt. If is for one of your employees then VAT is charged. Or that is how it used to be.

The Vertex Vent is a mountaineering standard helmet meeting EN12492 and is classed as a recreational type of helmet the same as the STEIN Super Plasma TC. As these are classed as recreational this means they are VAT Chargeable whether purchased for work or not if purchased without ear-defenders and visor. Now if they are purchased combined with ear-defenders and visor it can then be classed as a work helmet so the vat regulations regarding EN397 helmets apply.
