I'm after a small axe for splitting kindling. It's mainly broken up pallets so is easy enough to knock through with a good axe. But we seem to have misplaced our last one. Plus it was old and a b&q special. I've seen one for around £30 which looked the dogs danglies. But what other makes would you recommend?

Gransfors bruks are hand made in sweden , they make lots of different types of axe including a small splitting axe ! But I'm using the small forest axe ( bushcraft axe ) for splitting kindling and I think it's the Mutts nuts

an old yorkshire pattern billhook is just as good as an axe for splitting pallets for kindling

Not just pallets.... I use mine to split logs down to kindling as well. My newer one c1980's will split logs but not as efficient as a splitting axe and I have used it to fell small trees as well as snedding and hedgelaying.

The old one c1850's is now slightly redesigned due to age. Had to take off some of the curve of the point due to the metal going too thin and for a similar reason it as now as a one handed haft on it rather than the original double due to the socket being well worn. This billhook is the one I was taught how to use as a child by my Great Aunt and it was her Grandfather who had it forged (or may have actually forged it, never did quite get to the bottom of it before she died).

Grudgingly (:001_smile:) I have to agree with Penfold on this. I've always found a billhook far better than a hand-axe for splitting down kindling, plus if you find a good old fashioned English-made one at a carboot or junk shop it will hold a far better edge than these crappy new ones.
