Knife handle wood?

I recently bought a knife blade from Tromsøin northern Norway. It has a taperd tang and the handle was traditionally hammered onto the tang.I would like to make a handle out of hardwood and this method would probably result in splitting the handle. So I'll make a two peice handle, releive the area the tang sits in and epoxy the halves together.I have some seasoned Oak deadwood that I slabbed, what would others reccomend as a stable alternative?
