I recently bought a knife blade from Tromsøin northern Norway.It has a taperd tang and the handle was traditionally hammered onto the tang.I would like to make a handle out of hardwood and this method would probably result in splitting the handle.So I'll make a two peice handle,releive the area the tang sits in and epoxy the halves together.I have some seasoned Oak deadwood that I slabbed,what would others reccomend as a stable alternative?

many of my knives from finland have really nice birch burl handles on them, then seem plenty strong enough to have quite a lot of leverage placed on them without any bother at all

I made a 2 part handle for a knife out of pear and am really pleased with it. I split the handle then used a router to make the recess and added some groves for extra epoxy.

 

I have seen stunning handles made from yew and also laburnum.

 

Have fun with it.

Cool thanks.I have a mate that makes all sorts of decorative things in Birch Burl,I'm just a fan of hard woods.

I think I'll co with the oak with a copper endcap and copper guard.

Very good suggestion,thanks!I will score some Reindeer Antler just to be a bit different.There is no shortage of that stuff here,just have to find the peice that "feels" right.

 

I'll post photo's when I'be finnished.

hey mike... looks like a Sami blade to me esp. as it is from the north or Norway.

 

Why not use traditional method of a Juniper handle as the Sami's did.?:001_cool:

Juniper just isn't cool enough for me.
