Nails for tree tagging? (arbotag)

Hi All,

New member here, I'm actually on the other side of the pond in chilly Canada!

I'm working on a tree tagging/mapping project for a client, and we've acquired an arbotag system which uses 3" finishing nails to attach the tags to the trees, and allow the tag to move with the tree as it grows.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of nails to use with the system, but it's no easy task:

- The sample nails that came with the arbotag seem to be coated "bright" finish that would offer virtually no rust resistance...the client doesn't love that idea.

- Galvanized is an option, but I was wondering if this is OK for the tree, given the zinc content and sacrificial anode...or if it's a concern at all.

- Stainless would seem to be a good option if I can track down some nails to fit the magnetic hammer...?

- I read (on this forum!) that aluminum would be safer for tree workers down the road, it wouldn't interfere with chainsaw chains and so on. The problem with this is that the non-ferrous metal isn't magnetic and won't work with the arbotag hammer / cartridge system.

So any advice on best practices for tree tagging nails?

Thanks!

the hammer is excellent Matt if its the one i think it is. I used 1 years a go. The nails, hammer, folder, pen in your mouth in the freezing cold aint fun. I can never usually understand my squiggles when i get back to the house near the end of the survey lol

Every time I go surveying it seems to either rain, snow or it's so cold I cant feel my hands!!
