Just found this vintage film of some real men logging in the winter. It was a hard job, working close to nature, with horses and wildlife close to you....no chainsaws... In the end you can see the unloading area on the frosen river. In the spring as the ice was melting the next phase in the industry took place, a busy time for the log-floaters, and a dangerous one.

The last timber-floating in Sweden 1970 before lorrys and powerplants made it impossible.

I wonder if in a hundred years time well be looked on as hard workers? and if the generation of foresters will think we were mad for doing what we do!

 

I often wonder that. The old skool stuff looks amazing; really is a window to another world.

in 100 years time all trees will either be chopped down or in a museum
