Insurance nonsense and cs units.

A friend of mine has just renewed his PL insurance. He asked me for some pointers and i basically gave him links to Trust, Arbinsure, Your insurance group, and the banner on Arbtalk advertising 'insurance for tree surgeons'(or whatever it is).

Well he has been trading for 25+ years, and has only ever done 30/31. So trust have said they will put a 5m height restriction on his policy, although a letter from a training provider stating that he IS competent would suffice without 38/39. Bit weird but there you go. The other companies said they didnt care if he had the tickets, and one company said they had never heard of cs30, 32, 38 or 39, and what was this cs business. I mean WTF????

They all also told him that he didnt need EL if his employee had their own. One company said they would beat trusts quote by £100 straight off, and still didnt require proof of training, and that trust made it up as they went along.

WTF are we supposed to believe? With all this differing information and copanies slagging each other off, and all having different criteria etc, I wonder if any of them would actually ever pay out, and furthermore, why should we all bother paying for training and insurance, esp given that in 25 years my mate has never had an accident. In 14 years i have never had one either.

HSE and best practice aside (as these are the obvious reasons for training and insurance), WHY??

i mean without proof of training to the insurer, any tom dick and harry or ne'erdowell can buy insurance and when asked can produce it, thus giving the impression that they are bona-fide etc etc.

have found trust spot on TBH especially when it goes wrong, had a car nicked & got a cheque for more than i expected within a couple of weeks. That said i'm qualified so wouldn't have a problem with sending my NPTC's in & whoever you go with if u havent got 38&39 on site when it goes wrong they'll be taking u 2 the cleaners who-ever insures you!

But that the whole point. They shouldn't be insuring anyone without knowing what they have got or haven't. Thats the farsicle thing about it. They will take your money, you'll be insured, but when it goes wrong its your fault if you didn't have the correct cs units so now your not insured!!

That's quite worrying that one company said that they'd never heard of the nationally recognised NPTC units! Having just spent a small fortune on acquiring 30, 31, 38 and 39 in order to get the correct insurance, I'm wondering myself which would be the right insurer to go with.

I'm not saying it's right but it's the way it is, same with any insurance, buildings, contense, motor all sorts, if you arn't forfilling stat obligations then they must pay any 3rd party, don't have to pay you & can come back to you for the cost of paying the 3rd party/s. Stinks but that's the way it is. For the sake of payin for a couple of NPTC's just get them done
