From what I could see of the remaining leaf on the crown it looked a perfectly healthy tree. The only defect was tehe fruiting body. The tree was also in the most sheltered part of the campus so even though the wind was strong it was probably only affecting the upper 3rd of the canopy

Enough of a lever to pull it over. It had the 3 worst things for a tree to deal with.

1. Strong winds

2. Heavy persistent rain

3. Fungal problems.

 

Although i have seen big leaning trees in the middle of summer just randomly fall over.

well done Detritus, big tree is on the deck, no one was hurt and that is the main thing.:thumbup1: Rather than doing break/ step cuts on a leaner like that,especially on an oak, doing an open gob at the top and then undercutting gives more control, the secret is use the biggest saw you can lift.:laugh1: well done:001_smile:
