one of them things that are up to the oraficers frame of mind on the day, i once got a notice of 'prohibition of use' for the ifor williams trailer as the breakaway cable had snapped the day before, (i forgot to undo it and pulled away) they said to ring them when i had fitted a new one, fitted nextday and prohibition notice lifted when they nipped round to the house to check it the following day, 3pts and a fine sounds a bit harsh to me..

Dont worry it happens to most of us this last march I had the good fortune to have a police sergeant , on his way to work no doubt late (not the time of the month ) he did a starsky and hutch in front of me and my trusty tractor and told me to report to him at the "office" , I did and he gave me opton of arrest or £30 FPN , what a happy start to his day !

We are currently borrowing a chipper that doesnt have an emergency brake cable and no handbrake but does have normal brakes. We have fashioned a failsafe out of some chain that has a breaking strain of 2 tons even though the chipper only weighs 850 kg. Got pulled over on the way back to the yard for no license plate on the back of the chipper. Damn thing had fallen off on the bumpy track. Never mind got a spare one but still got a £30 quid FPN.

its called responsibilties guys, you are incharge of a vehicle and trailer it is up to you as the driver to make sure it is in good condition and legal, as the buck will stop at you. We are only human and get complacent UNTIL something goes wrong, we get our knuckles wrapped and you now have a point of reference in your mind to why you shouldnt and what you should do in these situations. Matt next time you hit a big pot hole on the rd, pull over and check, carry a couple of spare regys. :001_smile:

This thread should be called ' Got away with out killing someone, i owe that policeman a pint '

No one, especially men like to be criticised, we instantly get defensive and come out fighting, but as time goes by and you get a chance to reflect and maybe hear on the news or on here how someone had a bad accident doing something similar, i promise you, you will think a lot diferently.

Man up and take it on the chin and implement some new rules, stickers for the vans with a check list and leave it on the drivers seat, tick boxes and a signature, job done.:thumbup1:

Whats strange is that we hadn't been on a road with any pot holes. Granted there were a few rough patch but no craters. We should have checked but we thought it would stay on there as it was a major pain in the rear to get it on the trailer as ti was held in with 4 mirrow clip type things. We will now wing nut the spare one in place.
