I'm not sure of the names origin.

 

I've heard it called ;

 

English Maple

Maplin tree

Dog oak

Cat oak

& Whistle-wood

 

Guess that as it's normally associated with Field hedges or Woodland edge, this may have given provinance to it's common name.

 

All the same......................it's reet neece like
