I want to Move

Here is my quandry.

I have a good small tree business running in Essex with some good contracts and much repeat business and little need to advertise.

I have a tip site on a farm within 1/2 a mile from my property where I can store up to 100 tonnes of woodchip at a time and logs.

But we wish to move closer to the Cornwall/Devon border where property is cheaper and living standards for a family are better.

Would it be realistic/feasable to sell the business and start again in the west country or can any of you advise further......

Maybee you have done it before or just have some sound advice.

would anyone be interested in a decent business opportunity with existing clients ?(Tree Surgeons, Hertfordshire, London, Essex, UK - Height and Light Tree Surgery Ltd)

Patrick

Really? Are you sure you've researched this properly? I have in-laws n Essex and visit on a regular basis. House prices in Essex are similar or cheaper than many Cornish locations, food is cheaper, as is fuel. Services certainly are - Cornwall has the highest water bills in the UK.

Oh, and just in case you think you can make the difference up in earnings, Cornwall has the lowest wages and the highest wage to house price discrepancy in the country.

Sometimes the grass isn't always greener...:001_rolleyes:

Hi Pat,

won't advise you on moving your buisness as I have no experience, but........

You're just about to have one of the worlds largest events on your dorstep in less than two years, and this I have no doubt will be a massive economic & social boost to the south east particularly.

I would of thought that for an individual with the right head, buisness & family oportunities during and immeadiately after,

would be dynamic & a once in a life time wave to surf.

Would you want to miss that?

Good luck in whatever path you choose :001_smile:

Unless you can move straight into a good/ viable contract, than it is going to take you years of hard work and financial uncertancy to get back to where you are now. It sounds to me that what you have got is pretty good, and having lived in Cornwall for two years, the traffic and general busyness everywhere is probably no better than where you are. If you want a quieter life style head north.

Good luck what ever you decide

Thanks for your responses,

these are exactly the kind I expected to be honest, this is why arbtalk is so valuable to us as tree surgeons.

I know I need to keep a level head on this and I also know that earnings in the west country are less but so are property prices....surely if I can scrape £100,000 off the mortgage then I wont need to earn as much.

I also notice that although earnings are less you floks in the west country charge around the same for a bag of logs ! (I went into the garage at St.Erth yesterday, one bag of dried conifer logs for £3.50 ! )

Another thought is that if I moved with all my kit and threw say 3 to 4 thousand at good advertising in the first year would I be able to earn say £400 per day(2 men and a chipper) ?

Can you not run your existing company from a distance? perhaps using one of your guys as manager, rent your property out then move into rented accommodation, then in your new area start another branch of your own company?

Give yourself a year to make it work if it is not going how you thought move back. Good luck with what ever you decide mate. :001_smile:

nice website by the way.
