David,

just got my 3rd, wood is free, the time etc to sort it is not. They work well as room heaters, if they're put in right. They can heat the whole house and your water with a little effort.

Downside is they can't be set to come on 1/2 hr before you get up or come home.

If in doubt get a one with a bigger grate (= less work in wood prep) and you can always have a small fire in a big grate!:001_smile:

depends on how sophisticated you want your woodburner. You can now get fully automatic burners like the refo which can work in the same way as a gas or oil central heating boiler using woodchip or wood pellets. If the fuel store is large enough you may only have to fill up and take the ashes away once a month.

We have an Esse woodburning range for central heating and cooking. And a Yeoman stove for the living room also linked to the central heating. We inherited the Yeoman and will eventually replace with a clearview as the Yeoman is very inefficient

We used to have oil central heating using 6900 litres each year. When the price went up to 28p from 9p we moved onto wood. I think the current price is about 62p per litre for heating oil as opposed to timber for nothing.

renewablejohn,

Looked at pellet/chip boilers when I put ours in. Decent chip was sketchy (better now) and pellets a farce round mine. I also wanted to use my own wood. There are some cracking wood fired boilers about (the continentals have had it sorted for years!) and, as you say, if you've got the space for the fuel store you can have the user friendly features, self start/shut down etc. Still don't know of a "wood burning stove" that will do all that. Do they exist?:confused1:

This is our stove. We heat and cook on it. Have never turned on the electric backup. And we have gone -30 deg F (-34 deg C - I think).
