fireing a friend is the last thing i want to do

And firing a thief is the 1st thing you should do! because he's a friend (was?) its even more of a betrayal.

That's a downside to having friends work for you. You feel obliged and you don't want to discipline them. If any of my mates tried to rob anything I don't think I'd even consider them a friend anymore tbh

I'd be doing it with a heavy heart, but I would be giving him his marching orders I'm afraid. Things like this tend to escalate IME, if he's nicked one thing, he won't have a problem nicking again. As Andy said, you can't really class him as a mate if he nicks stuff. (Especially YOUR stuff). That's my take on it mate.

You are too close to the subject, we are not, we see it as it is, and make no excuses. Personally I wouldnt brood over it. You brought it up on here to get answers and opinions, the over-whelming majority here have said more or less the same. Thats the answer you knew would come. You cannot afford to work all your life for someone to just take whatever he wants, when he wants. Dont worry about being fair to him, he has not been fair to you. He made that choice.
