HSE Regs...the facts.

Hi, I am currently ensconced in a debate as to the need to use PPE whilst operating a strimmer. Obviously there is the need for ear defenders and eye protection as a basic starting point.

Steel toe caps are standard safety footwear. What is the need for a hard hat in open areas, nothing above essentially? Surely the risk of boiling your brain or sweating into the eyes til blinded outweighs the need to use a hard hat?

Anyone knowing the law is invited to enlighten me please. Or better still, if you got a link from the HSE Safety leaflet....

There is snow LAW regarding this, only recommendation. Most users do not wear a hard hat only face and ear protection. The onus is on you to assess the risk then use the correct PPE you have stated in your assesment

see link in my last post - this leaflet uses the term 'required' in reference to it's list of PPE

i am currently working as a grass cutter at present for a local council (until a tree job becomes available!)

and we only wear safety goggles and safety shoes. obviously ear defenders but i choose an mp3 player instead as i find strimming a complete bore:bawling:

so as far as my employer wants is ear, eye and foot protection. no need for hard hat unless there is a danger of something landing on head.

the only hse i have concerns a clearing saw not a line strimmer

hope that helps:wave:

Hi

From what i learnt on the trimmer course that you don't have to wear a hard hat if your not working under any trees ect where something could fall on you. For example trimming along a pavement you wouldn't need a hard hat but if you went under a tree >2m in height you would.

Pretty much gonna go with you guys on this...line strimmers are clearly not the same thing as a clearing/cutting saws...

It makes sense that you should adhere to policy set out by your employer and that probably means with the assessment made by the safety officer...

Only asking cos I think my safety officer is a bit of a by the book geezer and wont think for hiself...not very inspiring eh!!? lol

Hi all

im an instructor in the strimmer/BC/ClearSaw area and 2 weeks ago had my 5 yearly recertification event, o yep we have to retake our tickets too, and if now were out,

the best practice reccomendation for STRIMMING is eare protec, a full face solid visor, i use the stilth combination, its ok better than origon but not the best, brush cutter the same unless the woodyer material is of a height were it may fall on your head, but clearing saws you must have head protec if head injury likly just like in the leaflett.

non snag outer clothing good foot wear boots personal first aid kit

the reson for the full face recomendation is the sh*t or toxic plant mkatter being thrown in the face

hoipe that helps

any questions buzz me

cheers
