why the peak then trough then peak again David?

 

Read across from right to left on the chart, it shows; 1.5cm of bark, then 16cm of sound wood (peak), then 11cm of brown rot (trough) then 5cm of sound (peak) then the remaining 8cm of the 400mm drill as fresh air (trough) where you can see the needle has come clean through (in the last shot)
