880 and sawdust

All our big Stihl saws get dust through to the carb. The filters never seat properly and don't seem to catch the fine dust. Nature of the beast I suppose.

I see that garden hire spares do after market filters that look different to the stihl part.

+1 on the grease between filter and back plate. I noticed some dust getting through on my 460, and gave it a layer of high temp bearing grease all over the mating surface. Problem solved.

That fine dust seems to get through the actual filter itself though and not just under it.... should be better from Stihl really - they've had long enough to get an air filter that does it's job without restricting air flow.

I found using those cotton buds on a stick really good for clearing out the fine layer of dust.

I've bought the 880 filter on ebay. Looks well made but I'm sure it will compromise the power, we'll see.

I have always used the HD system on my 88 when milling. It was supplied when i bought the set up, and iwas led to believe it was standard fare! It is similar to that which they fit to the cut-off saws (ts450s etc for construction site work etc), with no discernable loss of power.

All the older stihl pro saws have this prob, have tried the HD filter on a ms460 and although it reduced it a bit i think it had an impact on the saw as it wore out far quicker.

so a better filter giving cleaner air made the saw wear out quicker?

Sorry, only just found this thread!

 

Dust behind the filter is not good in any amount, so for those who think its acceptable, its not. Try and sort it out as it WILL reduce the life of your saw!
