I've worked for companies that would've made me pay for stupidity like that. 100 quid a week out of your wages. Not strictly legal but if you want to continue in your job you keep your mouth shut and your eyes open next time.

Turned out to be quite an expensive day for him. Reckon as he said he'd pay without any arguments I'd consider using him again (providing he's been good in the past of course). Doubt he'll be so cocky next time.

For an employee I would agree (IE in your case) but for a self employed person (IE in this case) part of being self employed is taking responsibility for your actions (HMRC even insist on them being financially at risk) so they should either use their insurance or pay up.

Their insurance wont ever pay up if its down to someone elses instruction, even if they ignore the instruction! Did he sign a risk assessment that states that he will definatly not fell the tree in a oner? No?

Thats beside the point. There should not be a BT bill to pay. BT will repair the fault free of charge as long as you get the affected customer to report the "fault".

As far as the cutter is concerned, he didn't do what the person writing the cheques asked for, so that needs sorting out the old fashioned way. No pay and no more work ever, good bye!

And if that don't work then there is the real old fashioned method!!

Rupe, are you saying that if I break a bt line as long as the client reports it there is no charge? Sounds to good to be true?

BT lines I'd have hoped he'd offer, blantanly his error, having said that though id look on it this way, what would the score be if it was a £100k worth of damage. I.e is he a subbie with insurance etc or a subbie for tax reasons, its a different thing. Someone that was employed would not be forced to pay for it, although it may be in their best interests......

Can you not get them done for free though, probably to late now but next time get customer/customers voice to ring up.

As for the spliced eye, i'd have said that was an accident that you should absorb as part of running a business and employing people, and was therefore unfair to make his cough for it.

Your job so the buck stops with you as far as the client is concerned, but he should reimburse you as it was against your method statement/request.

Cutting corners behind yor back is a serious breach of trust in my humble opinion.
