chainsaw mill

Hi, I'm looking for a chainsaw mill to fit on a 066 a costumer has requested some planks made out of his old oak tree.

 

does anyone know where to get one and how much roughly they are. also any tips on use would be helpful.

what part of the country are you from last bit of oak i had cut was taken to a sawmill between bury st edmonds and ipswich cost £40 to cut a beam and a few planks

if there is a lot of oak to saw a chainsaw mill will be slow work,

 

a mkIII alaskan will cost around £180 then about £35 for a ripping chain for a 36" bar

they are slow to use and cause a lot of wastage compared to a band saw, but really come into their own in confined site where the only other option would be cutting the timber into rounds for logs. (oh and use quite a lot of fuel, my 372 uses about a tank every 14ft)

 

dont know if anyone else has had this but make sure your bar nuts are tight every refill as i have lost 2 (not at the same time ) through the vibrations. try and get/beg/borrow/steal a metal detector! as nails arent funny.

 

regarding making the first cut i just ratchet strap a ladder to the log see below video

ok he doesnt use the ratchets by i do and just remove them when the saw gets close and replace once its passed

I run the Alaskan on either the 066 or the 090, again to emphasise what Charlie said, check side cover nuts every plank or so, along with chain tension. Milling is hard work for a saw. (Unless its an 090 )

The Oak i have is approx. 4-5ft at the base tapering to around 2.5-3ft at the top and about 20ft in length. then two smaller bits that forked from the top.

 

I'm from Hampshire so Ipswich is a bit far but thanks for the info. Ive tried a few local mills but they wont touch it.

 

How does it attach to the saw?

they just clamp onto the bar so no additional drilling,

 

just to clarify my 084 with a 36" bar will only realistically mill 28" width, so if your trunk is 4ft wide you need a 56" bar to cut full width and there is no way a 066 will pull that (unless you dislike your saws)

or you have to try and square the sides up by eye to get them to a width that will fit in your mill

 

what bar you planning to run on the 066?

i think its got a 36" on it at the moment. I thought that might be the case with the cutting width.

I cant remember when i felled it if i had to cut from both side or not. Ill measure it tomorrow.

I have a logosol saw mill and it does a job fine.
