Well, decided to take the plunge and filled up today with biodiesel for the 1st time. Had a fairly long run back and went just as fast but a lot smoother, especially on the idle. Checked out the seals issue and apparently it applies mainly to pre 92 vehicles after which the material used for seals etc was changed. Looking forward to finding out if the mpg improves.

2 tanks in and no problems other than a slightly lumpy start and a bit of smoke at the same time. Getting same mpg and performance is as good if not slightly better. Due a change of fuel filter after a couple more tanks so will see if any improvement after that. Smell is ok and gets you some odd looks at traffic lights etc

use bio/veg oil in my patrol, defender 200tdi, pajero, and sprinter van no problem at all.

Anyone know the implications as far as Customs and Excise go if you get pulled at roadside? Do you need to provide any duty paid paperwork?

I believe you can use 2500L per year without paying any duty.

this is very interesting!, pardon my ignorance, but, how do you mix the cooking oil with the diesel if you do a 50/50 mix?. Is it a case of diesel first then hoofing in the oil or vice-versa?. I've been thinking about this for a while. Bio-diesel is retailing for about 80-90p per litre around here, producing your own stuff would be a major saving - I read somewhere you can do it for about 25p a litre.

This could be an alternative to me buying a horse and cart the way things are going!

Spike, who is selling at 80-90p a litre? Cheapest I have found is nearly a quid.

Yeh, thought that was so but do you need to apply for an exemption for that 2500l?

 

I also wonder if that is per vehicle, per company or what?

 

How does anyone prove or disprove a 2500l usage?

 

Seems to be lots of "flexibility" and "trust" the way most people portray it. Not sure its so straight forward if Customs decide to investigate you.
