I am about to start work as a freelance climber, after leaving the RAF and was wondering what is the best way to get up and running?

I have my CS 30,31,38,39 my own climbing rig, Saws and truck and a little experience (part time work climbing for seven months)

Any advice would be really helpful, Money wise i was thinking of charging £80 per day, Is that a reasonable starting point?

I throw it open to the floor!

Thanks JB

I wouldnt start any less than £100 a day mate - your a skilled worker at the end of the day.

I would write to all your local co. and when they get stuck, you'll get a foot in the door !

Good luck and dont be afraid ! He who dares - wins !

Yes thats great!,you get some guy who tells you he's the dog bollo(ks,so you get him in for a big T/D and he can't do it! Thats great that is :icon14:

Always be honest about your ability,IMO,if you can turn up blind and do any tree, great, but if you have limitation don't be embarrassed, be honest and save every body a load of hassle.

i agree, but your not going to be a big td specialist on 80 a day. i recon 80 a day is fair if your not really slow.

I agree,I was not taking issue with the question at the start of the thread, which is why I had the quote above my post.

It was the advice to big yourself up which I disagree with.

I hope they are sarctistic comments!

It's better to be realistic with your skills, the thing about tree work is that you cant really buff your way along, you can either take a tree down quickly without destroying everthing in site or you cant its as easy as thaT. Dont get luled into thinking theres loads of easy money to be made, there aint.

agree, but you can make a living as a tree surgeon who doesnt specialize in large td. im living proof. although you have to be able to work at an efficent speed and not damage things.

Totally agree mate!:icon14:

There aren't enough big T/D to go round any way,so if you get a climber who only wants to do the big ones, he can be less reliable on the every day stuff.

My advice would be be honest about your ability, reliable, and hard working and you'll never be short of work.

I agree with the posts that follow this. As a business owner there is nothing worst then getting somebody call up and oversell themselves.

I had a guy a month or so ago call me, i called him back and he went to great lengths to tell me how quickly he can rig out masive wellingtonias !!
