Insurance confusion?

Hey. I have been using chainsaws on and off in my current profession (i work in conservation) for a wee while now. But this coming winter I am hoping to get contracted by the RSPB to undertake felling work on one of their reserves for 8 months. At the moment I am unsure if they provide insurance for the contractors, but I think that is unlikley. I think that for me working as a sub-contractor for the RSPB doing tree-felling, I will need Public Libility Insurance, but what should I look for and where sholud I go for this. Iv got a couple of quotes on the net, for gardening plus chainsaw use, would that be enough, or should I look for insurance just for forestry work? Any advice would be great! Thanks a lot, Ash

Hey 'Yoashman',

I would suggest that unless you are on the payrole for RSPB then they are actually engaging you as a 'main contractor' not sub-contractor, hence you are well advised (not a legal requirement) to have 'public liability' insurance, in fact RSPB should insist upon it.

As to from where (sounds likes 'Nessa' of 'Gavin n Stacey') as other suggest try across (left or right dependent whihc way your standing???!!!) or, under the circumsatnces, perhaps try NFU...dunno?

Cheers..

Paul

I would just like to add that I would suggest contacting the RSPB concerned about the level of cover they require. Having contracted to the wildlife trusts and the like in the past, I might not be surprised to find an insistence from them that their contractors have a minimum of £5milion public liability. Dont let this put you off however.
