How/why did you get into treework?

I was a rock climber from an early age I guess, I'd been riding motocross for a while. I wanted to be a stunt man in the movies. I was advised (incorrectly) by the careers office that this was an impossible dream. I said whats the next dangerous thing i could do other than the armed forces (trouble with authority and being told what to do). Tree surgery she said. That was in 1981.

First got the bug aged 7 when my mates dad Mr Kirsley of flintshire woodlands used to let me watch and help tidy up after his weekend jobs on the housing estate i lived on. then many years later after doing a college work placement At Bodnant estate near conwy i had a go climbing and loved it and have been doing it ever since

I was relieved to be made redundant from an office job I hated at the end of 1992.

 

Tossed it off for three months beating on local shoots and a bit of casual farm work.

 

I answered an ad in the local rag, "Tree Surgeon requires assistant"

 

Didn't know what tree surgery was about but went along and got the job!

 

Previously, I had worked in a sawmill for a year and on farms plenty and had achieved the tree climbing badge when in the cub scouts. :001_tongue:
