Gratitude

As many of you know I give all my chip away.

I have a chip pile which is at the side of an access road which is used by hundreds of people, I have told people who ring and ask they can help their selves to the chip.

As a result they shift hundreds of tons a year for me and keep the chip pile down, I've never had to have any taken away.

I was down there today loading the mewp and couldn't believe how many people actually turn up with vans and bags on the weekend to collect the stuff

In the 6 years the chip pile has been in that spot not one single person has ever shown their gratitude, given or offered me a bottle of wine or anything.

I did think about putting up an honesty box for charity but that would most likely get nicked but judging by the selfishness of the people who come I reckon it would never get a donation.

I am moving yard soon and what I intend to do if there is a way is to put a sign up saying " The chip is free apart from a donation of your choice to this charity" and have something setup through paypal or something so I can monitor what gets donated.

If no donations are forthcoming, I'll shut down the free woodchip and just sell it for boimass instead and teach them a lesson

I think if you do something where people have to go to effort by going through pay pal ill doubt youll get a donation.

Can you just put a table and chian a box to it or something similar and go past every other evenng to collect the monney?

Good on you for thinking about charity rather than yourself good bit of PR to

I think the box would get pilfered at any oppertunity.

I know I have saved some people hundreds of pound because one rung me and he couldn't believe it was free if he collected, he had been quoted over £200 by a garden centre for a couple of loads

So my thinking is that a couple of minutes online donating will be nothing to them.

I did get a bit mad the other day because I get fed up with them leaving rubbish on the chip pile, they seem to think it's ok to bring their old plants and clippings to tip and also leave knackered one ton bags and plastic containers that they take the chip away in

It just goes to show how selfish some people can be

It depends where you are really, haulage isnt cheap but there is an agency that takes all the work off your hands and comes to collect as and when you say there is at least a bulk loaders worth at the yard.

it is TOTALY hassle free, and i find it remarkable that more poeple do not do this.

Sure you have to avoid stones in the loads, easy, and you might need to have breaker bars added to the flywheel to get the chip consistant but thats no effort other than usual.

we get no agro, never had a load back at our expense and power plant guys are well happy with our chip, begging us for more!

But you have to have artic acsess and load it yourself, so thats a telehandler needed aswell, and people do get loads back, i have looked in to it and unless you produce LOTS of it and can garantee its clean it aint worht the hassle IMO

I think it's £7 a ton but what put me off was having to have the means of loading it yourself into the artic

I believe now they are offering to self load ???

The last time i looked into it you had to load it yourself, i can borrow a telehandler no probs but for £7 a ton i cant do with the hassle.
