Was donated a perfect condition hedge trimmer this afternoon which wont start.  Its 25yrs old, just doing 5hrs a year with it for myself.  Always was a good starter until yesterday, when it wont fire up.

Test as follows

Fuel Good

Spark Good

Exhaust Removal - Piston is scored............now i  know why it wont start, It has come compression I guess as it pulls a good bit stiffer with spark plug in than out.  It gave a roar once for 2 seconds while i was attempting to start it.

Its in perfect condition, thus I think its worth an engine rebuild.

Where would I source a kit for it

Shindawa LE230 engine, a 22.5cc.

I'm not on commission from L&S but maybe should be. They are listing some Shindaiwa models, which probably means they have parts listing and can order in parts. I'd gather up what model and serial numbers you can see and give them a ring, presuming you want genuine parts.

I have used them for around 12 years and can't fault them....perhaps we both should be on commission 👍

Some pics Can I reuse the cylinder I wonder

I measured the ring

32mm Piston,  I removed piston ring from cylinder and inserted into cylinder on its own.  Piston ring gap of 8 thousands measured with feeler gauges.  Ring gap should be 5thousands per inch, thus for a 32mm should be 6.5thousands or thereabouts, 8 IMG_20250918_200239_697.thumb.jpg.80470dd10779ea224b88cd030f9fb391.jpgthousands is not bad.

See some photos, any ideas what caused it.

Damage
Piston - Cant feel the damage with the skin on the pad of my finger, but can feel the damage with my fingernail. I guess I need a new piston and cylinder
Cylinder - Cant feel any damage with either pad of my finger or finger nail, except for the edge I have highlighted, it was not a good idea cutting a pocket out of the cylinder wall like that when Maruyama were doing their design. was wondering could I reuse the cylinder. ?

Cylinder head is shiny on one side, thats not the side with the arrow.  The arrow side points towards exhaust.

L and S seem to be on the up and up, and rightly so. Driving through Brum the other day I saw that they had an advert on a huge electronic billboard beside one of the main trunk roads in. Quite surprised.

The owner is a lovely guy. He told me once that he started out sweeping the floor in a factory.
