What’s even more of a pain is arriving to your yard in a morning to find your chipper gone. It takes 5 seconds to push a chipper inside a container. It’s a two man job which we do every evening. Or for the times I’m alone we have a battery winch set up inside the rear of the container and I use that to pull it in on some spare climbing line. That’s about 30 seconds.

I second what Mick said. I’d just add that you want a box welding onto the lock of the container door so that once the padlocks on you can’t get an angle grinder on it. I’d also park your trailers in front of the container doors and put a wheel lock on them so they can’t be moved. Just an added layer of security to stop them getting in the container quickly.

We had a box ,all they do is leaver the box to break the padlock ,

Really you want a box ressed into the door itself  , but then they come along with a plasma cutter and cut the side of the container .

The loss adjuster came out once and said to me he had a client that buried a shipping container, they were in and out within 5 mins .

All u can do is reasonable precautions as if they want it they take it and thes nothing you can do.

Also the law doesn't work in your favour they just see it as a business theft ...oh well.

Hi all. ..

As it says were moving into a new yard soon, pretty good size with one container, I had hoped to put another container but the owner wasn't too keen on the idea we are getting this on a 6 year lease with a 3 year clause ..

Was wondering if you guys leave your chippers out side? can't imagine its very good for them,  putting this in and out of the container daily seems like its going to be a bit of a pain ? But at the same time I wanted to keep things as secure as possible.. ?

Our trailers are going to be out side in the yard, as won't be able to fit everything in one container, but dont think this will be too much of a problem ?..

Wasn't planning on leaving any saws, or personal climbing kit on site, or small tools ..  was mainly for waste, logs, chips , the chippers and such, and I was looking at buying a Spyder lift and a skid steer in the future, and hoped to split and stack logs  ..

any pro tips on keeping things secure Do's and Don'ts from experience ?  its a exciting time for us but wanted to get it right ..

Keep saws in house or shed,  in personal experience most time  theifs only want whats easy to move on sell on and trying to replace kit is really hard ,because no one carrys much stock in .-unless your fortunate to live next door to the big sellers

Could always clad the container (inside or outside) in sleepers - thick enough that the angle grinders can't cut through... but if they want in they will... back to the beginning, keep the chipper inside so you arn't advertising what else you might have hanging about.

yeah , deff somethings to be thinking about

think firstly we are not going to advertise our location, and all wood drops and such we will deliver only, this will avoid people coming to the yard..

the yard is behind three locked gates , and going to put up some mesh so people can't see in,  Will put the chipper in the container and lock it inside, need to get some ramps, prob make some ..

all our saws, and expensive climbing kit, gonna take home, won't let anyone leave their kit..

the trailer will need to be left outside and would have to lock this up, and keep it out of sight ..

We watched a vid on FB where a tree firm was turned over, and they appeared to take everything, on the video, it looked like they knew where everything was,  my first thoughts was it was someone who had been there before, maybe worked for them ..   I imagine it must have been devastating ..

Thing that pissed me of was not working out what was stolen or being able to replace it even though I had a 9k limit on a business credit card ..and they came back again took a new stihl Ms 241 when my dad was taken ill..but its the damage they do and the police 's piss poor attitude.

My nephew's garage was done, and before he replaced the kit, he thought that the insurance cover he had was way over the top. When he started replacing kit, and he realised that like most of us, he'd often bought kit when it was on special offer, he basically hit the limit of the insurance quite quickly.

I was shorted £5k for a chipper by one of the main arb insurance players who advertise heavily.

My mate was hit (container) and they paid out £8k for £40k’s worth of kit.

You need locks, alarms, cameras, more alarms, more locks, 12b black powder mines, the list goes on.

Never rely on one single thing.

You are up against professional gypsies, sorry, thieves, who now have every tool at their disposal.

Grinders, gas axes, tracker detectors, night vision etc.

If they want it and it’s there, it’s gone.

I’m not being a pessimist, but if you are putting all your kit in a container that’s in a yard ‘with some locked gates’ and leaving trailers out in the open it’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s a  question of ‘when’.
