Or do they think i have?

I need some work signed off, which I fully understand some trades aren't happy to do, so I expect it to cost a premium, it goes a bit like this.

Inspect and sign this off bud?

Yep, £350

(Although way overpriced) I go with.it.

I'll be there Monday, but you'll have to send me the dollar over now..

Never dealt with the fella before. Either I'm going mad or...

Interesting way of doing business. Don't you do the work, invoice then supply documents after payment or am I a dinosaur in a modern world of shysters🤔

That is the way it works in my world, he signs off my work, then I pay him for the tickets if my work meets the required standards. Or I could just send him the dollar, (what does that actually mean!?) Before I've clapped eyes on him.

Loads of warning stories about this online - trades asking for full payment upfront - conclusion is usually a red flag warning. Exceptions tend to be if they are a small outfit buying in specific stuff that their trade accounts (30 days payment terms) wouldn't cover.

Inspect and test you are only paying for time, trader wouldn't have any upfront fees.

Worst case I would accept is to pay cash once they do the job / get here.

I do it sometimes where it's not even necessary for my protection - to normalise it. I'm fed up hearing about scum clients taking tradesmen for a ride so I'm nudging the market towards being safer for us. Similar activism as charging what I dayrate charge for freelance climbing (usually starts with a 4 or 5, sometimes a 3 or 6). I decided rates were a piss-take and I was going to push them up. You're welcome.

Or I'm a chancer. Whichever.

Ive never came across this scenario before but then Ive only ever worked for people that I have previously known. Although I have to pay tradesmen x amount up front before starting building work to part cover the cost of material etc. TBH I suppose it isnt a bad idea to at least charge a percentage as AHHHHP mentioned.

I'm now moving into engaging freelancers more than being one so that was clever of me.
