Good evening

Just joined the forum after doing lots of googling looking for advice

I have a large sycamore in the front of my rental property, the large roots at the bottom have started lifting my paving slightly, I went to the property to have a look and noticed that next door neighbours (housing association) ha

ve had contractors in to relay some of the paving, the tenant wasn't aware, the housing association have authorised the work

The contractors has used a stump grinder  and removed lots of the root at the bottom, about a foot down. I've had a mate who's a tree surgeon look at it, and he thinks it's potentially made the tree unsafe!

I've added a couple of pics for info, I'm concerned now that the tree could pose a danger to mine and next doors property?

What do you think is the right move now, is it safe? Should I have it taken down? Talk to the housing association who authorised the work?

I hope this is the right place to post

Cheers Steve

I'd say you are right to be concerned, difficult to really assess anything like that from photos but it looks like removal of structural roots, yes potentially compromised safety.

As to liability or who should pay for any remedial work, minefield. Legal action is much more expensive than tree work in general.

Yes i was thinking that myself. Tree is on my property, I believe. It's on the boundary but more on my side

Wasn't any communication from the contractors who did they work though

Trees done, it might not know it yet. I'd be claiming against the contractor

I'll be contacting them this week. My concern now, is the housing association who authorised the work, might try and bill me for the 3 paving flags that it lifted

Guess that's cheaper than having the tree cut down though, which I'm guessing will be their cost

The damage calculated won't just be for the removal of the tree, they may end up having to replace "like for like" depending on if it has a high amenity value. You're best to consult a qualified arborist.

I’ve seen trees survive worse.

I’d just wait and see.

Any chance of a picture of the whole tree?
