Thought it was pear but it’s a PAIN to split.

Wood is still moist but larger logs won’t split with the axe.
From what I’ve read, hawthorn is tough to split.
The grain doesn’t seem to ever run straight.

Am I better to leave it to season a little first?

I’ve always found hawthorn splits really easily when green but goes like concrete when seasoned. Best get it split early 👍

It’s not like hitting concrete, it’s just not splitting.

I found pear splits quite readily, especially if you are using it for knife scales and after spending a lot of time of effort carving and shaping etc you think the brass pin could do with just one more very light tap. :(

What are you trying to split it with, type or make?

Roughneck ROU65678 Log Splitting Maul

It has no trouble with most logs.

I was similar, however I have a fiskars which is much better, lighter, sharper, and splits most things. The only thing I need the maul for is when the wood has lots of knots/branches

That bark looks more like Pear to me. I don't have much experience splitting that. I've done lots of Hawthorne though and had no trouble at all. Yes, the grain isn't that straight, but it doesn't seem to impede things at all.

That's not hawthorn; the wood hasn't turned that beautiful golden brown colour.  The bark pattern in the pics is too coarse; hawthorn's pattern is more linear and less in small square plates than that of pear.
