I think they may have heated again to expel excess creosote. If the wood was wet it would foam over, like potato chips into hot fat, and the lot would go up.

Much better than tannalising, electric and telegraph poles were done the same years ago?

Tantalising or tannalising? Bit of a difference?  Epic pictures, our local estate sawmill was a flat belt Robinson reciprocated single blade plus various other bits of kit like a thicknessor and mortise cutter. Spent a bit of time there before the place was locked and the old boys went home!
