So this has happened 3 times in the last 8 months or so . I'm driving along and the engine management light comes on ( orange ) I think oh bollox . So I phone my local garage and book it in . This happens on the Friday and they can't look at it till Tuesday . I say ok thank you . Avoid driving it as much as possible but have to do the odd trip . This evening I went to the shooting range with light on and when I came out to drive home it went out . So no light no , point in putting a code reader on it . Bonkers innit ? I will phone them tomorrow and tell them .

If they've a decent reader, it will show then a stored code even after it's gone out.

Should have stuck to an old series 3 Land Rover, where is Kris when you need him. 😂

One thing I learnt today from a mate is that if it is a minor ( non life threatening code ) then it will pop up to let you know and the after a pre set number of starting cycles  it will go out again until it thinks it needs to remind you again .

Is it diesel and do you do lots of short journeys?  I've had the dreaded DPF fail plus all the associated sensors.  Expensive.

Yes , been there . Had to have a few forced regens done and oil change when it diluted the engine oil with fuel . One sensor replaced ( inlet manifold boost pressure sensor ) I did do lots of short trips where in the depths of winter the temp needle would hardly come off the stop . This combination is the perfect storm for clogging the DPF . However I do less trips now but the ones I do are much longer and everything gets hot enough . Not had any DPF props since  then .
