Holly smells of cat piss.

I started making a yule log table centrepiece out of a nice holly stem I knocked before Christmas.

I stopped very quickly indeed. Horrible stuff!

Alder is a beautiful bright orange when split, you'd have noticed and remarked on the colour I think.

So I took some of the (outer?) Bark off and there was a sort of reddish colour underneath. The split ones are picture 2 so not red in the middle.

Hello.

New to the forum,  I have been lucky enough to have access to a fair amount of felled trees.

Silver birch being one of the species.

Could someone help with identifying the following two? I have already split them.

A friend thinks they might be Alder

Thanks in advance

I should have made it clear, picture 1 and 2 are different loads from different places, might be the same though

Good for the burning? Thanks

Replying to Gareth RE- Cyanide associated with Cherry Laurel and Bird Cherry, both burn well.
Yours looks like 1) Ash 2)Ash but could be Alder or Maple, Alder would be noticeably lighter than Ash or Maple burn all burn well. 👍
