Couple of simple bits I knocked up for Christmas.

 

Ring from a cedar we felled about a month ago.

Candle holder from a Big Cone Pine we dismantled about 12 years ago and I just had lying round the workshop meaning to do something with one day.

It will split for sure Alan, but hopefully not before Christmas.

 

I could screw a plywood circle to the underside.

It would probably still split but not move, if that makes sense?

 

That would ruin the aesthetic for me though, so we’ll just see how long it lasts.

Let it crack, then fill it with epoxy mixed with gold glitter, Japanese kintsugi style. The crowd over on Etsy would bite your hand off for it.

 

We found ourselves hosting Christmas in our new house last year but, gasp! No coasters, and a whole pile of inherited teak and oak furniture! I snipped a dozen thin cookies from an ornamental cherry felled a few weeks previous. Half split, but not until mid-January, and they got promoted to dog toys. The other half, oddly enough, are fine, and are still in use to this day.

I did make this chunky half stool from a seasoned (outdoors) cedar log a few years back and it has done alright.
