When I got stopped by VOSA with my lass driving towing an empty car transporter he made me take over the driving as I have pre 97 licence. He said that even though the trailer is less than 750kg empty it has the potential to be loaded to 3.5ton so is illegal to be towed by a post 97 licence holder as you have the ability to break the law.

 

 

Interesting, we've had two different answers from the people that are supposed to be in the know. I was thinking about dropping them an email but I'm a bit worried I might get answers I don't like...............

STS is correct, a pre 97 licence holder can in theory be done for driving a car with a tow bar plated over 750kg as has the potential to exceed their licence's towing capabilities.

 

stevie, to be legal, you need to find out what youre van is legally capable of towing, the trailer must then be plated for no more than that weight, otherwise you have the 'potential' to exceed the vans towing capablities. i THINK im right in saying most trailers are built to 3.5T, but the the plate is downgraded to suit the towing vehicles legal towing capabilities, typicaly around 2.7T (only vehicles with permanant all wheel drive, e.g some landrovers are rated to tow the full 3.5t)

What size trailer is that stevie?Do they still not make 12''x6''?Good trailers,well designed.I like the way the electrics for the tipping gubbins are in a box,unlike the ifor,which at this time of year is not very handy.

In fact you shouldn't be driving a vehicle with a tow bar and NO trailer with a post 97 licence as you have the ability to hitch up a greater than 750kg trailer and therefore would be illegal.

 

Interstlingly, in greece its illegal to have a tow hitch and NO trailer. So all tow hitches are removable. Then when you are towing a trialer it has to licensed and registered as "belonging" to that vehicle.

 

But this is in a country where no one has a license or insurance oustide of the mainland anyway, and no one gives a stuff and they don't have a VOSA or anything!!

drawbar looks pretty close to the backdoor there tom, can you open the back door or turn tight with the trailer?

Dont know about your renault. But any van in the uk that is plated at 3.5 tonne ie needs no operators licence. Defo will not tow more than 2000 kg and some a bit less. Most double cabs only tow 2000kg as well. The navara in 2002 was 3t but they dropped it to 2.6 on the next model because they were falling to bits.

I think the Isuzu rodeo and ford ranger are still rated at 3000 kg.
