If a patient sling does not have a manufacture date marked on the sling and the date is not known should it be scrapped.

I suspect this is a genuine LOLER question from another industry but the rules should be the same  in that a person is being suspended.

 

I predate LOLER somewhat but my understanding is if the sling is textile based it has a life of 5 years, if it has no date into service then there is no telling how long it has been used and hence it is not fit for the purpose.

 

Any LOLER inspectors care to correct me?

Worth looking up the instructions for the sling, it should tell you how and where the date is listed on the item. A lot of manufacturers have the date of manufacture within the serial number. DMM for example is the first two numbers are the year and the next three numbers are day of manufacture. 
If the sling is CE certified it will have to have the date in there somewhere, why manufactures won’t just put them on there as a date is bizarre, or at least all do it the same way. 
Think most textiles as said, is five years, but some like climbing harnesses are ten years now. Also date of first use can be the point set life span starts from.
