Chain saw Milling a long stem

Client wants a single piece  7 - 10m board from a walnut we felled.  (as long as possible) 

 

I  usually use ladders for my first cuts, but don't have a ladder that long - 3.5m I think. 

 

Any tips for getting the first cut on such a long stem?

Tricky job, maybe set a laser level along the line you need the ladder to be on and when you get close to the end of the cut, pull the saw out and advance the ladder, using the laser line and some wedges or whatever to get the ladder lined up again? Then push the saw back through the cut til it comes to the ladder and repeat

Never tried it, probably way more of a ballache than it sounds.

What about getting two ladders lined up end to end so you can run the chainsaw mill up one and onto the other. Id use a string line and spirit level to ensure they were lined up. Then secure both as normal and make the first cut.

Charge by the hour

I used a couple of 6m 9x2 joined together then lined everything up with string lines and packed underneath where necessary to get it level
