Transit not tipping

My venerable old 06 Transit has a problem.

It has been getting really sluggish to tip over the last week or so, although it seems fine on the down cycle.

 

I checked the hydraulic oil level a few days ago and it seemed fine.

 

This morning I tried to tip it (empty) so I could check the battery connections etc., but it would only tip a couple of inches. There is power getting there, but seemingly not enough.

 

Where should I start looking?

Twin batteries under drivers seat.

The truck starts no problem.

 

The problem now of course is that I can’t get underneath the body to check anything over.

Pump would be my first guess, probably worn out the internal seal as it's probably gravity down.

 

Don't think I've seen one with a double acting setups connected.

Do you think I can discount battery issues on the fact that the truck starts fine and there is obviously still power getting to the pump somehow?

 

New pump isn’t something I’d take on myself.

There are some hydraulic boys just up the road from me who are meant to be pretty good.

If the trucks running and it's connected directly to the battery then it shouldn't have a problem providing the pump is running.

 

It could be the hydraulic cylinder seals I guess, but I'm sure the hydraulic guys could test all that for you for next to nothing.

 

Is there a manual pump ?

Electrical terminal/connections on ram/hydraulic motor, get under to have a look and clean them up.

No manual pump.

LED tipper control in the cab seems to think everything is fine.

 

I’ll try and get to the terminals later Mick, be a pig of a job from underneath.

Seems strange how it’s just died slowly if it’s dodgy connections though.

You’d think it would just be YES or NO.

 

What’s the easiest way of getting the tipper up to get to the pump?

Not really, cos it’s arcing and building up that rubbish on the terminal.

if it was the hydraulic motor it would come down on its own.

Low tech, get a few guys to lift it up whilst you press the up button.

 

Once up made sure it's chocked!.

 

The pump on most doesn't run when coming down, it's just opens the solenoid valve and lets it's flow under gravity back into the tank.
