Walnut

Milled an old Walnut log this afternoon between rain showers.

 

Funky stuff going on in the grain.

 

4' beam, 12"x6".

 

Want to make a wine rack with it, but still can't source an 80mm auger bit.

 

Extendable cutter bits no good, nor are hole cutters or core drills.

 

Any help appreciated.

What you need is something like this Draper Expert 80mm HSS Bi Metal Holesaw Blade 41089 in Hole Saws from Draper Tools at MP Tools

If you drill down to max depth and then chisel out and do same again until finished. Get a sanding drum and sand inside to smooth, other than that drill lots of small holes chisel out and sand.

 

Hope this makes sense

 

You can also mill 1 1/2" -2" thick drill the wine sizes holes on 3 planks and then glue together.

Looks like a right nice bit of wood there Mark.

 

If you find a big auger to go in say an SDS drill post it up... I've been looking but can't find anything that'll go past 100mm....

I notice the missus has made sure you have a tarp and shovel at the ready for milling in the garden !!!

I was thinking maybe if you could suspend a chain saw on something like a pillar drill (ob much more heavy duty) so that it pointed straight down, fire it up and start it spinnning and have a handle to lower it through wood as the whole thing is spinning...

 

 

That would do it!
