When you are using a long reach trimmer do you wear a harness same as you would for regular strimmer work or do you use it freehand,  the work I would be using it for would be at waist height or thereabouts but would be 5ft away from where i am standing.

That depends entirely on you and the job at hand. Waist height is ideal really so you probably wouldn't need a harness. Unless you're going to have to do it for prolonged periods, i.e. hours or days on end. They can also save your shoulders sometimes if you're doing high cutting. As mentioned above, they do get in the way though so I wouldn't bother unless you need to. Also, go for a proper chest type harness, not just a shoulder strap, otherwise you'll still end up with knackered shoulders!

Strimmer harness, no.

Might be worth looking at the easi lift or gtm elephants trunk harnesses for a long reach trimmer. They are clunky and more of a nuisance in tight spots, but On the right job they are great at distributing the machines weight and taking the load off your wrists and shoulders.i probably use mine on 50% of hedge jobs. Makes a big difference come the weekend, less so if you're only doing your own hedges though.
