Weird one this.

Put it into reverse and the engine cuts out, all power including lights.

Unplug reversing sensor, no issue except it won't pass the 'control technique' (MOT)

Bought a new sensor, worse, reverse lights on all the time.

Change plug, no change.

What is likely to be the issue here?

My bestest guess sat here in a chair is there is a dodgy earth on the vehicles body earths ( not the one from the battery- to the engine) and its trying to find an earth return through the reverse switch, hence dying when selected. There will be a nest of earths somewhere, might be an idea to find them and run a jump lead from the  battery - to them, just thoughts.

Italian electrics can be a real head scratcher even for an experienced auto electrician

You do have my sympathy with the Iveco problem. Why, oh why, does my 2014 Daily have an ECU for the towbar electrics in the first place, and why, but why, is it positioned right behind the rear wheel waiting for water and salt deposition. Changed the fan belt on my 1975 series 3 Land Rover a few days ago, £4.80 and all is well again. Hope you get the gremlins sorted.

No.

Are the original reversing lights obligatory for the MOT?

I wonder if a less expensive option is rear spots activated by a switch in cab...?

I stand to be corrected here, because this is contradictory, if it’s got a light it should work to pass a MOT, but reverse lights only need to work on the offside to pass a MOT. A switch on the dash won’t pass a MOT, unless you are in Stoke where £80 will get you a MOT.

At least one reversing light must be fitted and in good working order otherwise it's a MOT failure but only on vehicles registered after 2009.
