Harness

Just want to bump this thread to repeat a question. 

 

I'm looking to replace my harness, and I'm still thinking of other options too, but a friend of mine is a Petzl vendor and would give me a good price. 

 

I'm still pretty much a DRT dinosaur but I'm going to make the switch to SRT, honest, don't judge me. But the Sequoia DRT/SRT... does the ventral attachment really make that big a difference? Is one out of the two better at doing the both? Are the cons of one hugely outweighed by the pros of the other? 

If anyone has time in both harnesses (or just the one, either one, we are all friends here...)

 

I'm just curious as to why there needs to be the option available if there isn't a compromise from one for the other, if you see what I mean.

I didn't know what a Croll was. Not sure I see it being really useful unless you do massive ascents, maybe it keeps you upright easier but I tend to think the trick is using minimum gear else you're faffing around all the time getting things stuck.

A Croll is great, I've used them a couple of times when testing gear for my mountain rescue activities, as it provides a 2nd point of attachment with minimum faff. But I'd not be massively convinced by using one in tree work unless, as you say, it's a massive climb... which just don't exist in my line of work in Ireland. We don't have tall trees, they all got turned into ships for the English. 

Yeah, I agree, minimum gear is better, generally, unless you need to tick a box.

Ah come on, you don't have tall trees cause it's too wet and windy for them to stay up. But whatever the reason, East Anglia where I live isn't the land of tall trees either.

Also a good reason, but the natives still like to blame us for it whenever possible. Easiest to just not argue, usually.

I think the whole point of the SRT version of this harness is the central attachment point is for the croll or similar and used in a traditional SRT Acces system, Microfrog or ascending with Jumars.  Be it caving or access to the canopy via SRT.

 

Most treework SRT systems work well off the traditional work attachment in the bridge.

I use a  sequoia srt harness, use the bridge for working in the tree and for ascending, the central belay loop comes in great for working on spar on a take downs though, keeps everything close in especially using a rope runner. 

When I was using a rope wrench I would use the central attachment use on assent as bringing everything closer makes ascending easier. 
Think adjustable bridges on a lot of the new harness would do this to though.

As @Rich Rule said it's there for the rope access world etc. I've climbed in both and can't see any advantage. Save your money

You posted as I was replying. The adjustable bridge is a good call. He could get one on the sequoia and improve either of them
