Softwood going brown - A9?

Had stuff to do up I Inverness and noted that many of the roadside softwoods alongside the top end of the A9 have the lower foliage right brown. As in, they are dying! Have my doubts that they have been affected by saltspray off of the road and it doesn't look like wind chill so curious as to what could cause it? Unfortunately,  I didn't have the presence of mind to stop and photograph and it is a bloody dangerous practice too.

You sure it wasn't heat stress, it was absolutely scorching the other week.

 

Like 27c in Aviemore and had been that way for a good month and a half

A9 always been bad for this on conifers always known it to be due to salt spray, with the amount being thrown about nowadays.

They're pretty mad with the salt on the trunk roads, it's like 6months of the year. Even if it's not that cold you'll see them spreading
