Sparse Pine Tree

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone knows why the bottom of this tree has lost all its pines?

It has been like this for at least 8 months now (was planted by previous house owners) and realise it’s probably cramped conditions. I was hoping they would grow back with Spring but it hasn’t happened.

It still seems to be growing at the top, but nothing new at the bottom branches. Tree next to it not as bad but also a bit sparse.

Is there anything you could recommend to help growth at the bottom?

Thank you!

Thank you for your replies and explanation on pines.

Was hoping for more growth on the lower part of the pine where the branches are, or at least stop pines from dying further up the tree.

Sounds like they won’t happen unfortunately.

Appreciate your help!

You’re right, they are a pain to clean but they provide privacy from a block of flats behind them.

Is there anything you could recommend to stop the pines from dropping? Would trimming the top of them help by providing more sunlight?

Thank you!

A few coats of lacquer should stick the needles on them fairly well, just top it up every 4 or 5 years, depending on wear and tear.

Alternatively, replace it with a fake plastic tree, and eliminate the shedding problem altogether.

Looking at it long term, they will be 60ft trees, with just the main stems screening the flats and the crown of the tree above your line of vision.  As suggested, maybe consider replanting some sort of hedge.
