ID please, and can I cut this back quite hard?

I have a tree/(large shrub?) I would like to reduce quite a lot but I don't know what it is, and if it takes hard pruning well.

 

There are no growth points to take to past the outer crown - if I cut it in the inner woody sections without any foliage (as you could with a laurel for example and it would come back fine), is this suitable for this plant?

 

Advice and an ID would be appreciated.

Not sure about the bark but the leaf suggests Osmanthus

Cut a couple of stems back hard and see what happens

No idea what it is but we cut one down from 8ft to 6 inch once for a customer expecting it to die and be asked to grind the stump at a later date but no the bastard thing grew back with a vengeance.

Yep olearia. Cut the f**k out of it and it will come back with even more prolific regrowth. Often used as a windbreak nurse shelter around coastal forest plantations here on SW coast of Ireland
