Wood finishing question again

Making some rustic stands out of cable reels for the shop. Usually I sand down and stick some danish oil on followed by wax, but with these i'm probably not going to sand them down smooth enough so will be hard to apply wax. Plus i'd like a bit of a rougher finish on them anyway. What would you recommend to treat them with?

Boiled Linseed Oil?  If you want you could apply two coats and the first would be thinned with turps for better penetration.  Heating the BLO slightly helps.

 

You could also patch the two holes with square pieces of wood that were the same width as each plank but half the depth.  Cut out square recesses to take the patches with a chisel or a router, essentially a type of "dutchman repair."  If you wanted to get really pro you could make a round tabletop from a piece of board and a router.

Tung oil would bring those up nice easy to apply.

I'm wondering if they could be sandblasted? Seems otherwise difficult to get all the splinters out from between the boards.

Finish doesn't have to be amazing and i'm pretty much working with the tools I have. Belt sander is about as pro as I get, although im getting through the belts fairly due to the staples. Knocked them in as far as I can.

 

Probably just going to pull out the worst of the splinters with pliers to be honest 😳
